Wiltshire, UK - May 2006

Introduction | Westbury and Devizes | Avebury | Beyond Avebury | Stonehenge | Old Sarum | Salisbury | Longleat Safari Park | Lacock Abbey and Village |

Mark and I visited Wiltshire at the end of May 2006 - just for a few days.

When we drove down the weather was horrific. We could barely see the motorway for the rain. I've always wanted to see the White Horse at Uffington (the highly stylised prehistoric one). Of course it was miles out of the way (in Oxfordshire) but when we got there the weather seemed to have cleared up a bit so we put on our waterproofs and went hiking across the fields. Needless to say the heavens opened again and we both got soaked to the skin. Worse than that you can't even see the bloody horse properly from the ground - it just looks like a chalk path. Don't bother going to see the White Horse at Uffington unless you have a helicopter or a hot air balloon.

We stayed in Warminster at a hotel called the Old Bell Hotel which dates back to 1483 and has the look of an old coaching inn, which is of course what it once was. It was cheap, clean and relatively quiet except on Karaoke night which they seem to take very seriously in Warminster.

Warminster itself isn't a hotbed of activity, but it's within easy driving distance of the main attractions in Wiltshire, and it does have some great little places to eat. We recommend the Thai Rice Restaurant and the Agra Indian Restaurant if you ever visit the town.
